Lionel Messi has just received the award for “most successful player in history” given by a leading Spanish newspaper.
Lionel Messi was recently awarded the “most successful player in history” award by Marca for having won the most collective titles of all time. Messi has won a total of 46 collective titles for Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, Inter Miami, as well as the Argentina national team.
During the ceremony, Messi received a gold statue designed by Argentine sculptor Carlos Benavidez. The statue recreated Messi’s familiar goal celebration, with two index fingers raised to the sky in memory of his grandmother.
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas and Marca director Juan Ignacio Gallardo presented the award to Messi. “It is an honor to present this award to Messi as the champion of champions, no other player can compare to him for what he has achieved in his career,” said Jorge Mas.
After receiving the award, Lionel Messi said that the most memorable championship was the 2022 World Cup, saying that this was “the biggest dream for a player”.
Messi added: “I don’t count the titles. It’s nice to watch the video, so many moments go through my head. We had many difficult situations, not everything was rosy. The moments of frustration helped me grow.”
The Supporters Shield with Inter Miami is Messi’s most recent team title. In addition to team titles, Messi has also won 56 individual titles according to Marca, including 8 Ballon d’Or awards.
